Sentient City is the first installation in a new series of cartographic works by Laura Elayne Miller. This mixed media installation is an artistic mapping of the topography of the senses in The City environment. Through an experimental cartographic process, physical data and sensory data combine to illuminate the relationship between geographical space and sensory perception. The topography lines depict “sensory elevation;” the peaks and valleys of our sensory experience as we wander the landscape of The City. Images portraying the cityscape, and metaphorical and literal sounds transpire in the highest plateaus. The lower elevations are respites from the heightened experience in this landscape. Ultimately, this experimental map reveals a deeper sense of The City environment as it evokes the internal sensory responses and feelings we all carry within.
